A Longtime Client Shares Her Experience With Bowen Therapy

One of the most meaningful ways to understand Bowen Therapy is through the experience of someone who has received it over many years.

Recently, one of my longtime clients, Ann-Marie, shared a post on her personal Facebook page about her experience with Bowen Therapy. She has been receiving Bowen work since she was young and has used it at different times in her life for a variety of concerns.

With her permission, I wanted to share part of her story.

“I have been having Bowen therapy done on and off since I was 12 years old and had to wear a back brace due to scoliosis. It has helped me over the years in so many ways: post-pregnancy, migraines, TMJ pain and most recently a frozen shoulder after breaking my upper arm. When I leave a session not only does my body feel better but I feel better mentally and emotionally from the pain relief. I have been seeing Cindy for years.”

— Ann-Marie N., longtime Bowen Therapy client

Why Bowen Therapy Can Be Helpful for So Many Different Areas of the Body

One of the things that makes Bowen Therapy unique is that we do not simply work on the area that hurts.

The body works as a connected system. Tightness or restriction in one area can affect movement, posture, flexibility and comfort somewhere else.

Bowen Therapy uses precise moves over muscles, fascia, tendons and other soft tissues, with brief pauses between sets of moves. Those pauses are an important part of the process because they give the body time to respond before additional work is done.

Rather than forcing the body, Bowen Therapy works with it.

Bowen Therapy for Back and Postural Discomfort

Ann-Marie first experienced Bowen Therapy when she was young and dealing with scoliosis and the challenges associated with wearing a back brace.

People often seek Bowen Therapy for low back discomfort, hip and pelvic tension, muscle tightness, postural imbalances and reduced flexibility.

My approach is to look beyond the exact location of the discomfort and work with the patterns that may be contributing to it.

Bowen Therapy for Shoulder Restriction and Frozen Shoulder

Ann-Marie also shared that she recently used Bowen Therapy while dealing with a frozen shoulder following a broken upper arm.

Shoulder problems can involve much more than the shoulder itself. The upper back, neck, chest, ribs and surrounding soft tissue may all influence how freely the shoulder moves.

Bowen Therapy can be used as a complementary approach to help improve comfort, mobility and flexibility as the body recovers.

Bowen Therapy for TMJ and Jaw Tension

TMJ discomfort can involve the jaw, neck, shoulders and muscles around the head and face.

People with jaw tension may also experience headaches, neck tightness or difficulty relaxing the muscles around the jaw.

Bowen Therapy allows me to work with these interconnected areas rather than focusing only on the jaw itself.

Bowen Therapy and Migraines

Ann-Marie also mentioned migraines in her post.

Some people who experience headaches or migraines find that tension through the neck, shoulders, jaw and upper back can contribute to how they feel.

While Bowen Therapy is not a cure for migraine disorders, helping reduce muscular and fascial tension and improving overall relaxation may be beneficial for some people as part of their broader approach to wellness.

More Than Just the Area That Hurts

One of my favorite parts of Ann-Marie's post was her description of how she feels after a session:

“When I leave a session not only does my body feel better but I feel better mentally and emotionally from the pain relief.”

That captures something many of my clients tell me.

When the body becomes more comfortable and movement becomes easier, people often notice a greater sense of overall well-being as well.

Every person's response to Bowen Therapy is different, which is why I tailor each session to the individual rather than following exactly the same routine for everyone.

Bowen Therapy for Low Back Pain & Stiffness: How It May Help

Low back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek bodywork. It can affect something as simple as getting out of bed or bending down to put on your shoes, and it can interfere with walking, working, exercising, sleeping and enjoying everyday activities.

For people looking for a different approach to low back pain and stiffness, Bowen Therapy offers an effective, non-forceful form of bodywork designed to work with the body as a whole.

How Does Bowen Therapy Work?

Bowen Therapy uses precise, rolling movements over muscles, tendons and connective tissue. Rather than relying on forceful manipulation or deep pressure, specific Bowen moves are performed with short pauses between sequences, allowing the body time to respond.

One of the things that makes Bowen Therapy different from many other forms of bodywork is that we don’t necessarily work only where you hurt.

Low Back Pain Isn’t Always Just About the Low Back

The body is interconnected. Tension or imbalance involving the pelvis, sacrum, hips, legs and surrounding musculature can influence how the low back moves and feels.

That’s why, when someone comes to Practical Bowen Therapy with low back discomfort, I look beyond the painful area and consider the body’s overall pattern.

Depending on the individual, a Bowen session may include work involving the low back as well as the pelvis, sacrum, hips and legs.

Bowen Therapy for Mobility and Flexibility

Pain and stiffness can cause us to change the way we move. Over time, those compensations may contribute to even more restriction.

Bowen Therapy may help reduce muscular tension and improve mobility and flexibility, helping the body move more freely and comfortably.

My goal isn’t simply to chase the place that hurts. I want to help the body function and move as well as possible.

What Is a Bowen Therapy Session Like?

Bowen Therapy is performed with a series of precise movements followed by brief periods of rest. These pauses are an important part of a Bowen session and give the body time to respond before the next sequence of moves is performed.

There is no forceful spinal manipulation, and Bowen does not rely on heavy or deep-tissue pressure to be effective.

Every person’s body and circumstances are different, so sessions are adapted to the individual rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.

Redefine Success

It All Begins Here

Confidence doesn’t always arrive with a bold entrance. Sometimes, it builds quietly, step by step, as we show up for ourselves day after day. It grows when we choose to try, even when we’re unsure of the outcome. Every time you take action despite self-doubt, you reinforce the belief that you’re capable. Confidence isn’t about having all the answers — it’s about trusting that you can figure it out along the way.

The key to making things happen isn’t waiting for the perfect moment; it’s starting with what you have, where you are. Big goals can feel overwhelming when viewed all at once, but momentum builds through small, consistent action. Whether you’re working toward a personal milestone or a professional dream, progress comes from showing up — not perfectly, but persistently. Action creates clarity, and over time, those steps forward add up to something real.

You don’t need to be fearless to reach your goals, you just need to be willing. Willing to try, willing to learn, and willing to believe that you’re capable of more than you know. The road may not always be smooth, but growth rarely is. What matters most is that you keep going, keep learning, and keep believing in the version of yourself you’re becoming.
